A DO since February 1990, this is the second largest of Aragon's four denominated areas characterised, like neighbouring Cariñena, by extreme summer and winter temperatures. This new region has a major potential and is more than capable of producing wines of character and balance while retaining excellent acidity-alcohol ratios. The DO consists of approx. 8000 hectares and lies immediately west of Cariñena. Its main grape varieties are Garnacha and Macabeo.
We at Moreno have recognised the potential of Calatayud and began our own winemaking project there, the first wines being released in late 1999. These are the Poema wines, made from Garnacha and are modern, fruit driven and very good value for money, try them and see.

"..remarkably floral with traces of lavender, spices, and Provencal herbs. The black cherry flavours are mouth filling and there is enough tannin for several years development. Tasted blind, you might think this was high class Chateauneuf-de-Pape." Robert Parker Price: £17.50 Including VAT at 17.5%
