This small DO consists of about 550 hectares and lies immediately north of Barcelona. The soils are predominantly of a meteoric granite known locally as 'sauló'. Winemaking here dates back to Roman times but production has dwindled in recent years due to encroaching suburbia and escalating land prices. Famed for its fresh, aromatic whites, its principal grape variety is the indigenous Pansa Blanca (related to the Xarel-lo of Penedès) although Chardonnay is also important. Most of the vineyards are in the hands of small growers, with an average holding of 2 or 3 hectares.
